A tasking request was received from Solent Coastguard requesting the launch of the ALB for two kayakers or paddleboarders in the water and clinging to kayaks or paddleboards to the west of Chesil Beach. A further situation report was received from Solent CG reporting the casualty as two persons in the water clinging to a paddleboard and being blown offshore in a position approximately 1/4 mile West from Quiddles Cafe Chesil Portland.
Once on scene the ALB was directed onto the casualties by a spotter from Portland Bill CRT who was located on an adjacent cliff top. A male and female clinging to their paddle boards were recovered onto the lifeboat and casualty care was commenced. Both casualties were extremely cold given that they had been in the water for a period of approximately 1 hour. The casualties were recovered in a position some 1.1 nautical miles offshore.
Coastguard helicopter R175 was also on scene, and winched the casualties from the lifeboat and took them ashore. ALB was then released to return to station, refuelled and made ready for service
