Weymouth RNLI Inshore lifeboat had just returned to station after the 150th anniversary Parade of sail for Weymouth lifeboat station on Sunday 28th July when they were paged to go to the assistance of a reported person in the water having fallen out of a boat.
Launched at 12.45pm and on scene at Overcombe Beach five minutes later the volunteer lifeboat crew found that the elderly male who had been driving the 4m RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) had been recovered from the water by a local vessel.
Having established that he was well they set about the task of stopping the RIB which was still going around in tight circles. Having tried and failed to catch it with a line, they decided to trail a rope in the water in front of the runaway RIB in the hope that it would get wrapped around the propeller.
This tactic worked and soon brought the RIB to a stop. It was then taken in tow and taken to Weymouth Harbour.
